Monk's Dream was the first album Thelonious Monk released on Columbia Records following his less-than-amicable departure from Riverside Records. Although he had previously recorded all of the album's compositions in various settings—with the exception of "Bright Mississippi"—the remarkable cohesion of the quartet brought them together into a masterful and unified statement. The result was a critically acclaimed album that earned widespread praise upon its release and continues to be celebrated as one of Monk's finest achievements. It also became the best-selling album of his career.
