Sixth album from uncompromising art-rock maverick malcontents The Neutrinos. Much of the album reflects their growing frustration, around the perils we face from climate destabilisation - that great, indifferent system error creeping upon the biosphere - and the ongoing search for solutions. This apocalyptic creeping dread is strongly reflected throughout the lyrics, coming on like intercepted, heavily coded manifestos of concerned climatologists. "We don't need a future that puts the soil in the hands of the worst of our kind." From Pass it On.
The music itself is a dizzying, schizoid assemblage, encompassing irrepressible grooves - the kind that recall fleeting moments of post-war, pre-anxiety bliss in some forgotten dance hall - and grinding rockers set to raise the dead. These are interspersed with occasional, unnervingly still forays into pin-drop quiet laments, whispered confessions, compelling the listener to swoon with a mixture of existential despair and genuine aesthetic pleasure.
The band has performed their 'sexy, urgent energy' (Time Out New York) in New York, around Canada, mainland Europe and numerous UK dates. 'A Neutrinos show will leave you dazed, shocked, maybe scared, but certainly thrilled', enthused World of Gigs (USA) in a five-star review. Their irrepressibly adventurous nature has also led them to perform on boats, in complete darkness in an art gallery, in a former horse hospital, a bus depot, a disused small animal hospital, a former Inland Revenue Office and a vast furniture depository. They have made appearances at the Bloomsbury Festival and the Festival of Love in London, North by North East, Toronto and Exit Festival in Serbia. Their music has been used for underground film soundtracks and throughout the feature-length Channel 4 documentary The Trials of Amanda Knox.
In recent years, The Neutrinos have largely eschewed the traditional touring circuit. Instead, they perform live as the exhilarating, boundary-pushing KlangHaus, a residency model in collaboration with visual artist Sal Pittman. KlangHaus deconstructs how a rock gig works with the audience in and around the musicians, literally inches away within a sea of light, projection and sound that responds to its environment. It became a smash hit at two Edinburgh Festivals before going on to sell out over 100 performances at London's Royal Festival Hall. Awarding 5 stars, The Times described it as 'A blast of aural and visual magic', while The Guardian's Arts Editor hailed it as 'a total game changer, the most innovative presentation of live music I have ever seen'. Climate-action sister show Darkroom performed to great acclaim at Edinburgh and at Glasgow's COP26 UN Climate Conference.
