Fifth album from The Golden Dregs, a six-piece band formed in Falmouth in 2013, with an established catalogue and audience built over a decade.
Strong physical product: artwork built around a William Blake image, with Gothic typography in the packaging, suited to vinyl and CD buyers and to independent record shop display.
Album of composite character studies drawn from adolescence and early adulthood, rooted in the literary Gothic tradition with a near-future edge.
The band is The Golden Dregs. The music is UK Gothic.
It is also the name of their fifth studio album. Due for release on 29th January via Joy of Life
International, the South London outfit mark a whole new era with guttural, ramshackle new
single ‘Real Thing’, out today (4th November).
Reimagining The Golden Dregs as the browning, dusty papers of an 18th century manuscript,
UK Gothic sees the band’s indie-rock pastoralism stand newly wrought in post-industrial
mysticism, torn in time between Peckham Rye and the Resurrection; the Body of Christ and Kim
Kardashian:
“UK Gothic reflects on my past, viewed through a gothic lens”, explains band leader and chief
songwriter Benjamin Woods, “As in gothic fiction, the characters are vulnerable and the events are
unexplained”.
Drawing sustenance from a childhood spent on the rural coastlines of Falmouth, an upbringing
as a Quaker, and the romantic visions of William Blake, “the father of gothic artwork and South
London’s Original Rockstar” (an image from his Book of Urizen features on the album’s artwork),
UK Gothic serves up a collage of fabled urban backwaters and biblical landscapes, where petrol
stations, shopping centres, and Lewisham flytips play host to the congregations, Easter
Sundays and Holy Wars.
Emotionally tuckered out after the arduous recording of 2025’s ultra-slick Godspeed - and all the
work that comes from being dropped by your label and starting a new one in Joy of Life
International (an imprint of End of The Road Records) - Woods wasn’t repeating the same
mistakes next time round. Demoing twenty songs on a four-track cassette machine over one
Christmas break, the name of the game was speed, and spontaneity, and a whole lot of trust. A
testament to their tightness as a band, the entirety of UK Gothic was learnt and tracked live by
the band in three days: “What you hear on the record is probably on average the fifth time they’d
played the song together.”
The result of all this is a ten-song set that breathes, creaks, and voyages like a trawler at sea.
With Ben Woods’ rumbling baritone croon remaining, as ever, the signature, UK Gothic guides us
through orchestral piano ballads and euphoric stained-glass rockers, channeling the tactile
textures of Fiona Apple, the gravitas of Nick Cave’s Abattoir Blues, with touches of Caroline’s
experimental flair (Ben is a former member).
Leading the album’s release comes new single ‘Real Thing’. Co-written with Ash frontman Tim
Wheeler, and taking spiritual fuel from Leonard Cohen’s 80s output, it’s a track indicative of the
album’s raw, rugged aesthetics, rushing giddily ahead into the danger and the light.
Speaking more about the track, Ben says: “It’s a different direction for the band. The song is
exploding with energy and rubble and bloodlust and passion. The story is of a romance in amongst
a group of radicals taking matters into their own hands.”
