Hot on the heels of their previously unreleased 1969 Rock Opera 'A Story By The Genesis', Luton's 'The Genesis' dig deeper into their archive and come up with two storming self written Mod tracks circa 1966/7. Recorded at Jackson Studios in Rickmansworth, Window Shopping could easily be an unknown Sam and Dave cover , whilst Engineer Man has shades of early Move with a classically inspired bass line and window shaking drum fills. Great Double sider for sixties DJs
HOT on the heels of their history re-writing 1969 rock opera 'A Story by The Genesis' (HOG3318) Luton's finest are back again with two previously unreleased 1966/7 sides from their period as a hard-gigging mod band.
Recorded at Jackson Studios in early 1967 these two tracks sit right on the cusp of Soul covers bands casting an eye to the coming psychedelic future. Whilst 'Window Shopping' is a slice of prime 'bunch of UK scrotes doing Sam and Dave', Engineer Man is an upbeat semi novelty romp, featuring plenty of sound effects beloved of the Jackson Brothers, as featured on their best known sixties recordings by Rainbow Ffolly.
After nearly sixty years on the shelf, it's no surprise that some details of these tracks are forgotten, in this case, the name of the singer on Window Shopping! At the time, Jackson advertised a 'Pop Single Workshop' in the back of melody maker, which chimes with keyboard player Christ Stokes' recollection that 'it was a guy who wanted to make a record but didn't have a band or a song, so we backed him on one of ours'. Similarly, it's *suspected* that the drummer is one Stevie Coombes, who emigrated to Canada, but no one is quite sure at this point.
