The Modern Jazz Quartet had become a jazz institution by the time Pyramid was recorded, but they never lost their creative edge, and their performances, even when presenting new versions of classics like "Django" or "Vendome" are quite stimulating, enthusiastic, and fresh. John Lewis was the director of the Music Inn, Lenox, Massachusetts, August 22, 1959 (B1) & August 25, 1959 (B3); New York, December 21, 1959 (A2-A3) & January 15, 1960 (A1 & B2). During Lewis' 1959 teaching period in Lenox, the Modern Jazz Quartet began to record the sessions that would produce their Pyramid. The album, one of the group's very best, would be completed during sessions held in New York on December.
