The 27-year-old Norwegian guitarist Joachim Lyche will be a new name to many but this auspicious debut with his trio says a lot about his ability both as a player and composer. Featuring a programme of seven of his own compositions, plus John Coltrane's 'Lazy Bird' and Joe Henderson's 'Punjab', Primal Heuristic is a remarkable guitar led trio production.
When it comes to role models of influence, Lyche studied under Staffan William-Olsson, Bjorn Vidar Solli and Frode Kjekstad (Lonnie Liston Smith) and has clearly acquired much of the aesthetics and musical thinking of all three highly advanced plectrum players. It also tells us quite a bit about which musical universe Lyche belongs.
Joachim Lyche: "When we create art in the moment, improvising in such a way that we are able to convey our feelings through an instrument, we are innovating and connected to a deep tradition and canon of music. To truly improvise, you cannot stop to think. Heuristics are mental shortcuts or "rules of thumb" that people use to make judgments and decisions quickly and efficiently, especially when information is limited or time is short. This record marks our debut with this group. We are excited to share our musical world and hope this record can inspire you to think anew and bring more positivity to the world."
Joachim Lyche: guitar
Uma Morelia Bustos Reksten: bass
