Honey Bane has spent much of her life refusing to follow the path expected of her. Emerging during the first wave of British punk while still in her early teens, hers has been a story of fierce independence and creative evolution, moving through and beyond the music industry while never losing the impulse to write and create.
Now, with ‘My Beautiful Demon Inside’, out via Caliban Sounds, Bane presents some of her most personal work to date: a raw, intimate examination of vulnerability, acceptance and the conflicting forces that reside within us. For Bane, the album can be distilled into the phrase emblazoned across its front cover: “Dissecting The Intricate Landscapes Of The Self.”
At its centre is the idea that self-love comes not from denying the darker, contradictory parts of ourselves, but from accepting and integrating them. It is something Bane addresses directly in writing about the album’s title piece: “To do this we must trust ourselves, respect and love ourselves, and when this has been accomplished we become whole.” Rather than conquering or suppressing our demons, ‘My Beautiful Demon Inside’ looks towards finding a way to live with them, drawing together those seemingly opposing parts of the self.
“I first worked with Honey Bane back in the late 1970s. Not for the first time, she was on the run from the ‘authorities’, searching for a life to call her own. I offered her one in the form of a 7” single on Crass Records. She was in her early teens but already had the wisdom of a young woman very much looking to do it her way. The single met with great acclaim, and we discussed at length the idea of working together on an album, but sadly it never came to be until now, some forty-five years later.”-Penny Rimbaud
