Renowned worldwide as a master of jazz and a towering figure in South African music, Ibrahim’s early career was highlighted by co-founding the pioneering Jazz Epistles alongside Hugh Masekela and Kippy Moeketsi, before performing with the Duke Ellington Orchestra after being discovered by Ellington in 1962. Blending euphoric South African social music, a blues-based pianism influenced by Ellington and Monk, and a deep revival of indigenous African traditions, Ibrahim crafts music that is inextricably tied to the spirit and liberation struggles of South Africans.
The album seamlessly weaves these influences into a vibrant sonic collage, juxtaposing traditional African rhythms, spirituals, and Islamic motifs with European chordal harmonies.
