A vital vinyl-era snapshot of Dark Globe’s early years — spanning deep breakbeat pressure, tribal club tracks and psychedelic electronic drift.

Glowing Embers (Collected Psychedelic Beats 1993–97) captures Dark Globe during one of the most exploratory periods in UK electronic music, bringing together key recordings from 1993 to 1997 — years in which Matt Frost and Pete Diggens were carving out a distinctive sound between underground club culture and more immersive, psychedelic listening spaces.

Originally emerging through their own Violent Drum imprint before being signed by Leftfield to Hard Hands, Dark Globe made records that were built for vinyl and shaped in real time: lean, melodic, physical productions made with drum machines, samplers and synths running live, then performed to tape by hand. These were not tracks endlessly assembled on a screen, but instinctive live arrangements captured in the moment — music with movement, tension and human feel pressed into every pass.

The result is a collection that shows both sides of Dark Globe’s identity. The dancefloor cuts — including “Mondo Scuro,” “Silver Surfer (Ambience Mix),” “The Ascendor” and “Def Hedd Disco” — are tightly tuned and produced with the floor in mind: deep low-end, hypnotic groove, stripped-back momentum and a strong melodic signature running through each track. The B-side opens out into the more transportive side of their work, with “Glowing Embers Part 1 & 2,” “Mantra Parts 5 and 6” and “Take Me to the Sound (Two Lone Swordsmen Mix)” moving into richer, more psychedelic and inward-looking territory.

At the centre of the release are the key tracks that have long defined Dark Globe’s cult reputation: “Silver Surfer (Ambience Mix),” “Mondo Scuro,” “The Ascendor,” “Glowing Embers,” and Andrew Weatherall’s Two Lone Swordsmen mix of “Take Me to the Sound.” Together they capture a group working at the meeting point of club functionality and sonic imagination — music made for sound systems, but equally for deep listening.

The collection also reflects a wider moment in British electronic culture when the dancefloor and the ambient room carried equal weight, and when artists were free to move between breakbeat, tribal house, downtempo and psychedelia without compromise. That spirit runs throughout Glowing Embers: one side outward-facing and physical, the other expansive, emotional and hallucinatory.

More than a retrospective, Glowing Embers (Collected Psychedelic Beats 1993–97) is a definitive vinyl-era document of Dark Globe’s formative years — raw, visionary and built exactly as this music was meant to be heard.
