This box set celebrates the brilliant artistry of Brazilian pianist Cristina Ortiz, bringing together the complete recordings she made for EMI Classics (now Warner Classics) between 1973 and 1980. Capturing the vibrant energy of her post-Van Cliburn triumph, this collection showcases her extraordinary versatility through an exceptionally eclectic repertoire, seamlessly moving from powerhouse concertos (under the baton of legends like Ashkenazy, Previn, and Berglund) to vibrant solo gems from Chopin and the rhythmic warmth of her native Brazil. She pairs dazzling technique with deep poetic insight. Eight albums have been meticulously remastered from the original master tapes and appear here on CD for the very first time, perfectly capturing a truly luminous pianistic talent.

Born in Bahia, Brazil, in 1950, Ortiz was an exceptional young talent who began playing the piano at age two and started formal studies at the Brazilian Conservatory of Music at age eight.

She moved to Paris on a full scholarship to study under the renowned pianist Magda Tagliaferro. Later, she expanded her training at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia under the guidance of legendary pianist Rudolf Serkin.

She achieved major international recognition in 1969 by winning the Gold Medal at the third Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, becoming the first woman to win the prestigious competition.

She has performed as a soloist with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Berliner Philharmoniker, Wiener Philharmoniker, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam, working alongside celebrated conductors like Vladimir Ashkenazy and André Previn.

Ortiz has built a discography of over thirty albums for labels such as EMI, Decca, BIS, and Naxos. While highly celebrated for her definitive interpretations of Brazilian and Spanish composers (such as Villa-Lobos, Falla, and Granados), her repertoire spans grand romantic concertos, solo miniatures, and chamber music.
