To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Robert Lester Folsom’s ‘Music and Dreams’, the sleeper classic seeing an expanded reissue this year, Beach House recast one of the album’s most iconic downer anthems, ‘April Suzanne’, on 7” single.
On the flip is Folsom’s remastered recording, completing a fantasy 45 for the curious and collector alike.
Beach House use the original’s languid drums and ethereal harmonies as a launching pad for a panoramic vision, opening as if under the hypnotic spell of Julee Cruise and soon soaring to cinematic heights with thundering percussion and ripping synths.
“It’s just something that I would have never dreamed, that someone I really admired would record one of my songs,” says Folsom, who has been a major Beach House fan since hearing their single ‘Norway’ in a record store in 2010, right around the same time the band were getting into ‘Music and Dreams’. It’s this cosmic synergy that lifts ‘April Suzanne’ upward.
