Agent originated as a songwriting partnership between Andre Kunkel and Craig Zurba before evolving into a full band in the mid-1980s. After gaining industry attention through a Canadian music contest, they became the first act signed to Virgin Canada, leading to the release of their self-titled debut album in 1986. Blending polished melodic rock with AOR influences, Agent drew comparisons to contemporaries such as Glass Tiger and Loverboy, while also echoing the sound of Preview. The album featured standout tracks including “Surrender,” widely regarded as the band’s defining moment, alongside “Headlines” and “Can’t Stop.” Despite strong material, the band’s momentum was hindered by internal changes and a lack of label support following executive turnover at Virgin Canada, resulting in limited commercial impact. In 1997, core members Kunkel and Zurba revisited their debut, re-recording the album with multi-instrumentalist Troy Reid for Escape Music. The band continued as a trio and released Evidence in 1998. Although commercially overlooked, Agent remains a respected name in melodic rock circles, remembered for the enduring strength of their songwriting and the classic track “Surrender.” Featured on backing vocals: Darby Mills (Headpins), Mike Reno (Loverboy)
