It's taken almost 50 years for the long-lost original score and soundtrack to Abel Ferrara's 1979 grindhouse / video nasty "The Driller Killer" to finally be released. Composed by Joe Delia, it features contributions from Tony Coca-Cola And The Roosters, and classical pieces by J.S. Bach. "Driller Killer was a crash course in real time to scoring music to picture. We sat around the Steenbeck scoring directly to Jackie's 2 track Tandberg deck. We had two synthesizers... an ARP odyssey and an ARP string ensemble" (Joe Delia).
Sourced from long-lost original film master tapes, approved by the composer and director (with creative input from director Abel Ferrara), this remastered edition was released for the very first time in May 2026 (LP, Recently Deceased), and now receives its first ever CD release. "Putting these tracks together is like field recordings but instead of the deep south it's the cross roads of 18 St and Broadway, a loft building next to the firehouse with a lot of this music played in an abandoned floor where we weren't squatting but were not far from it. Most of the people on this record are ghosts to me now, dead or just gone... but the ghost of Tony Coca Cola rides again with his head still on his shoulders and looking straight ahead with the sounds of 77/78 NYC all over the tracks" (Abel Ferrara).
"The Driller Killer" was low budget, extremely violent and transgressive, provocative and genuinely shocking, and at the time was only shown in the sort of fleapit, grindhouse, and exploitation venues associated with 1970s/80s underground cinema. Landing itself on the "Video Nasties" list, the VHS was banned in the UK for 15 years, it was only released in its full, uncut version in 2002.
Designed with the art of Douglas Metro's paintings from the film, the deluxe fold-out digipak includes lyrics and liner notes from Joe and Abel, as well as a folded poster featuring the original theatrical release art.
