“This is our Mba’ekuaa. Our Technology. You have your Mba’ekuaa, and we have ours” - Nhanderu Tadeu, Guarani and Kaiowá Indigenous Shaman. Can sound shape planetary futures? Guarani and Kaiowá Indigenous communities in Brazil understand sound as Mba’ekuaa or technology, which can have powerful effects on the world. In the current context of ecological crisis, these shamanic practitioners are using sound as a tool to communicate with other cosmic planes, enabling them to dialogue with spirit entities and restore balance with nature. Their sacred instruments are described as their “wifi to the gods" where the sounds of the instruments are seen to open a portal between worlds. Can sound take us to outer space? In the ancestral sonic traditions of Guarani and Kaiowá Indigenous communities in Brazil, sound is a powerful technology for cosmic communication and spiritual encounter. It is a vehicle for shamanic travel powered by three sacred instruments: the mimbí (whistle), the maraká (rattle), and the takuapu, a sacred bamboo baton. Crucially, the Guarani and Kaiowá use no hallucinogens; sound is their sole tool for voyaging between realms. What makes this project radically different is the depth of its collaborative process. A core condition was that the most sacred chants—viewed as potent incantations—would not be remixed or interfered with. This respect extended through the entire production. The shamans acted as executive producers, reviewing each track in detail and directing adjustments to ensure the final arrangements honoured their sonic traditions. They even named the tracks, comparing the psychedelic textures conjured by Youth and Matt Black to their own cosmic journeys. The result is a truly co-created album, a testimony to the power of sound to open dialogues that make new worlds not just audible, but thinkable and possible.
