Gabi self-released their debut album The Discredited Language of Angels in 2019 leading to significant BBC 6 Music support, including a live session on Cerys Matthews’ show. In 2022, they signed to Trapped Animal Records for the release of their second album Cockerel, they were a panelist on Steve Lamacq’s Roundtable and performed on John Kennedy’s Radio X-Posure.
In April 2023, Gabi released The Creation of Birds E.P on Daemon T.V, receiving airplay across BBC6 Music. The lead single Panic, a collaboration with Du Blonde, was added to Radio X’s evening playlist and was chosen by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Suicide Squad) as one of his top 25 songs of 2023. Gabi has since signed to INH Records for the release of their next album Radical Love.
Gabi has been invited to support a number of high-profile acts on tour, including Paris L'Olympia, Berlin Columbiahalle, and Bristol o2 Academy with The Libertines, London Palladium with The Boomtown Rats, Frank Turner's Lost Evenings Festival at the Roundhouse, an eight date U.K and Ireland tour with Edwyn Collins, 23 date tour with Big Country, and a ten date tour supporting Grace Petrie, which led to Gabi being invited to perform at Greenbelt Festival for the last two years.
Gabi is an androgynous queer artist creating lyrical alternative popwith a punk spirit. Gabi’s poetic lyrics are imbued with a magical realism; they are sensual, raw and visually expansive, reflecting their love of the poetry of Audre Lorde, Federico Garcia Lorca and Andrea Gibson, and the surrealist art of Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington and Joan Miro.
On the new album Gabi explores how love, creativity and wonder can rupture systems of oppression and instead cultivate new connections and perspectives, releasing a radical love that brings us closer together and closer to nature. They weave this together with intensely personal themes such as queer heartbreak and inherited trauma, and they write about their experiences of manic depression in a way they hope will make others feel less alone.
Gabi’s lyrics are always rooted in a belief in the power of the human spirit and a social consciousness instilled in her at an early age, being the daughter of a Chilean refugee. Gabi’s musical choices add emotional intensity whilst also giving their lyrics space to breathe and recline in the ears of the listener. Whilst the music broadly can be described as alternative pop, depending on the theme it sonically shifts between emotive, sparkling, dreamy synths, the raw energy of punk and acoustic intimacy.
