The band had shows in Western Europe, toured France, played their first gigs in London and attracted large audiences to their concerts. The song Reflections became a minor hit and went on rotation on \u003cstrong\u003eMTV\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003eViva\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Düsseldorf based group consisting of \u003cstrong\u003eThomas Klein\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eAndreas Reihse\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eStefan Schneider\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003eDetlef Weinrich\u003c\/strong\u003e began work on the album in Winter 1995\/96. Most of the song ideas had emerged as improvisations during concert soundchecks and were often played as encores.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn April, \u003cstrong\u003eKreidler\u003c\/strong\u003e set off to Berlin to record what would become \u003cstrong\u003eWeekend\u003c\/strong\u003e at a studio space in the empty premises of Milchhof in Prenzlauer Berg. \u003cstrong\u003eKreidler\u003c\/strong\u003e worked quickly – thanks to their recent performances, the band was well rehearsed. They recorded most of the songs in one or two takes, with some overdubs on location and some minor editing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd on 20 April \u003cstrong\u003eKreidler\u003c\/strong\u003e played at Eimer, the legendary Berlin-Mitte venue, a demolished dwelling where the audience attended on a level below the artists performing through the massive hole of a collapsed floor. After the gig the crowd moved up onto the roof to continue partying with \u003cstrong\u003eDigital Hardcore\u003c\/strong\u003e DJs. \u003cstrong\u003eJutta Bächner\u003c\/strong\u003e was in the audience.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAndreas got in contact with Jutta while she was working as a promoter for electronic dance music acts and labels and he was writing for Düsseldorf city magazine \u003cstrong\u003eTerz\u003c\/strong\u003e. Quickly they became friends. So when in 1995 she founded the label \u003cstrong\u003e Kiff SM\u003c\/strong\u003e, it felt natural that \u003cstrong\u003eKreidler\u003c\/strong\u003e should join the roster.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWeekend\u003c\/strong\u003e was released in October 1996 to an abundance of positive reviews. \u003cem\u003e \"[They] couldn't have chosen a better moment to pop up,\"\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMark Roland\u003c\/strong\u003e wrote in \u003cstrong\u003eFM\u003c\/strong\u003e. \u003cem\u003e\"You can just picture this lot, making it up as they go along, riffling into the night, trancing themselves into some kind of lo-fi, bare bones, technical ecstasy with a two-track open-reel tape machine quietly capturing it all,\"\u003c\/em\u003e and awarded the album 5 out of 5 stars.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWeekend\u003c\/strong\u003e connected rather separate musical scenes. The music was read as post-rock, electronica, and – obviously – placed in a certain tradition of Krautrock, the Rhineland type, \u003cstrong\u003eKraftwerk\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eNEU!\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eCan\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere were rave reviews in club\/techno outlets, e.g. \u003cstrong\u003eBleed\u003c\/strong\u003e in \u003cstrong\u003eFrontpage\u003c\/strong\u003e: \u003cem\u003e\"The atmosphere that their pieces consistently evoke is more than just a \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eWeekend\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cem\u003e’s precise description of what might still be happening around you; it is a moment of clarification – set in stone for years to come – of an irreconcilable relationship between man, machine and the universe, as it once was.
